Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL), the leading passenger car manufacturer in the Indian auto industry has been feeling the heat of the market slowdown for some time. While in the month of February the Indo-Japanese auto major faced the worst sales decline in 12 years, in April the car company again saw a drop of 3 percent in its sales rates. Much to the company’s woes, this sales rates drop was coupled with poor export rates as well.
While Maruti Suzuki is vowed to keep its leading position in the Indian market intact, it also wishes to become the leading car exporter in India as well by dislodging Hyundai Motor from its position. The company’s segment topping bestselling models are also facing stern competition from the new snazzy cars from the rival companies. In such a situation, the only way out for the Indian passenger car segment leader is to introduce brand new cars to enthrall the Indian car consumers and ignite their interest in the Maruti model portfolio. Thus, apart from the preparation of launching a slew of new cars in the market, Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch two cars with codenames YL1 and YL7. These new cars could also replace some of the Maruti cars with low demands, like the A-Star or the Zen Estilo.
One of these two new models that is expected to be launched first is the YL7 and it will be showcased at the next year’s New Delhi Auto Expo. After the debut the car is expected to hit the market later in 2014. This car will be compact passenger car and could replace the Estilo and A-Star. While the previous Maruti Zen was a big favorite of the Indian consumers the later version, tallboy Estilo could not find a place in the hearts of the Indians. On the other hand, the futuristic shape of the A-Star did not lure buyers much.
Another Maruti vehicle, the SX4 sedan could not really pump up the sales despite its recently revamped version with the same price, which is more fuel efficient than the preceding version. Maruti Suzuki thus, is going to launch a new C-Segment car that is codenamed YL1. It is expected to hit the Indian car market later in the year 2014. This new sedan is expected to be placed between the compact sedan Swift DZire and the SX4. While the SX4’s new version based on ‘Authentics’ concept is expected to be launched in India, the ongoing SX4’s place might also be filled by the new YL1.
Maruti Suzuki is facing great amount of competition as several other global auto giants are launching new cars against the top models of Maruti Suzuki. While Chevrolet Enjoy is set against the Maruti Ertiga MPV, Honda Amaze is locking horns with the topmost bestselling Maruti car Swift Dzire. Several other companies such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors and Nissan are also planning to launch new models that will give the Maruti cars stern competition.
