Maruti Suzuki is indeed having a hard time handling various aspects and ensuring its leading position in the car market of India. First the Indo-Japanese auto major had to try all sorts of strategies from launching special edition models to cutting costs in order to handle the slowdown. Then, the car maker got busy handling the stern competition that its sedan segment topping Swift Dzire faced from the recently released Honda Amaze, and Maruti quickly launched the Dzire Regal. Now, Maruti Suzuki’s successful MPV (Multi Utility Vehicle) has a potent rival in the Indian market in the form of the GM Enjoy.
General Motors has launched the Enjoy MPV with an aggressive pricing of Rs 5.49 lakh for the base petrol model and Rs 6.69 lakh for the base diesel model (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi) To directly challenge Maruti Suzuki’s hot selling Ertiga. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga’s base petrol variant is priced at Rs 5.98 lakh and the diesel variant is tagged at 7.81 lakh. Thus, the American auto giant is offering its enjoy at a cheaper price than that of Ertiga, which can seriously dampen the Ertiga’s sales. The base variants of Chevrolet Enjoy for the petrol and the diesel versions are priced.
The president and managing director of General Motors India, Lowell Paddock said that the Enjoy will compete in the very fast growing MPV segment in India. He also said that the company hopes that the car will be well accepted by the Indian consumers for its great quality and competitive pricing. General Motors targets the sale of more than 3500 units of Enjoy that is far lower than the average sale of 6365 units of Maruti Ertiga per month.
However, though GM’s Enjoy is priced cheaper than the Ertiga, it cannot overtake the Maruti rival when it comes to fuel economy. The petrol variant of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga gives the fuel efficiency of 16.02 kmpl, while the Ertiga’s Diesel avatar offers a mileage of 20.77 kmpl. Compered to these fuel economy figures offered by the maruti Ertiga, the GM Enjoy delivers much lesser fuel economy of 13.7 kmpl from its petrol version, while its diesel model delivers 18.2 kmpl. Considering that the Indian consumers are really fuel economy conscious, Ertiga still has a better hand over the Enjoy.
Then again, some industry experts hold the view that the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV is better styled than the Ertiga, moreover the Enjoy also offers greater interior apace thus, better comfort to the consumers as against the Ertiga. Thus it is okay, if the Enjoy is offering lesser fuel economy at a lower cost.
But yet again, the Indian car consumers have deep rooted faith in the Maruti brand which is lacking in the case of the Chevrolet brand name. So, Maruti Ertiga also enjoys the brand power. Time can only tell about the amount of success that the Chevrolet Enjoy will finally get to enjoy. Which MPV would you like to go for?
